Arnold Huttmann

Arnold Huttmann (born January 4, 1912 in Kronstadt ; † August 27, 1997 in Palling ) was a doctor, chief cardiologist , medical historian and local researcher from Transylvania . He was persecuted by the Romanian fascist government during World War II .

Life

Arnold Huttmann was born in Kronstadt as the son of the Jewish businessman Wolf Huttmann and his wife Rosa (née Weinreb). Huttmann's mother tongue was German. The family doctor in charge was the well-known Kronstadt doctor and medical historian Eduard Gusbeth , to whom Huttmann devoted several publications in his later life. In 1916, when the Romanian troops occupied Kronstadt, the Gusbeth family fled to Vienna . After a year and a half he returned to Kronstadt. From 1918 to 1922 Huttmann attended the Transylvanian-Saxon Evangelical Primary School in Vienna and then went to the Honterus Gymnasium . In 1929 he began studying medicine at the Charles University in Prague and in 1933 he became an assistant at the Propaedeutic Clinic in Prague under Julius Rihl. From 1935, Huttmann headed the electrocardiography station there. In this year also the medical doctorate took place.

Between 1935 and 1936, Huttmann did his military service in Bucharest . In the winter of 1937 he returned to Kronstadt. Here he opened a private practice for internal medicine and cardiology that existed for 21 years. In 1941, Huttmann was interned with other Jewish doctors in a prison camp in Vădeni. More forced labor services followed by the Romanian fascist government. From January to September 1945 he was drafted into military service by the Romanian army.

After 1945, Huttmann opened a cardiographic station at the Polyclinic in Kronstadt. After his appointment as primary surgeon and chief physician, Huttmann founded the hospital department for cardiologist and rhgeumatology on April 1, 1949. This heart department in Kronstadt became one of the three most important special heart departments in Romania at the time. During this time, Huttmann was also a senior area cardiologist in the Kronstadt region. From 1955 he dealt with local and regional medical history. So he deals with the Kronstadt doctor Paulus Kyr and in 1972 suggested the translation of his health teachings into modern languages. His mentor was Valeriu Lucian Bologa , University Professor of History of Medicine in Cluj-Napoca . In 1955 Huttmann was one of the founding members of the "Romanian Society for Medical History".

In 1973 they emigrated to Germany after the third exit application was successful. The family settled in Aachen . In 1976 Huttmann became a lecturer and then honorary professor for medical history at RWTH Aachen University. From 1981 to 1987 Huttmann held the lecture "Introduction to Medicine" at the chair for the history of medicine and hospital management under Axel Hinrich Murken at the Aachen University Hospital .

As early as 1975, Huttmann became a founding member of the natural sciences section of the working group for Transylvanian regional studies based in Heidelberg . In 1997 Arnold Huttmann died in Palling, Bavaria.

Services

As a medical researcher, Huttmann was primarily concerned with the causal connection between nicotine and myocardial infarction, which he was one of the first to be able to demonstrate through the statistical analysis of the medical records of his heart department in Kronstadt.
