Eduard Gusbeth (born August 30, 1839 in Kronstadt / Transylvania ; † April 12, 1921 ibid) was a Transylvanian doctor, holder of the “golden doctoral diploma” from the University of Vienna , medical historian and local researcher.

Life

Eduard Gusbeth was born in Kronstadt as the son of a tailor . He attended the Honterus High School in Kronstadt. He passed his Matura on September 4, 1858. After initially wanting to study theology, he decided to study medicine in Vienna. In 1858 he moved with five other high school graduates in a plan via Zeiden to Timisoara and continued the journey to Vienna by train. In Vienna he had famous teachers such as Joseph Hyrtl (anatomy), Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke (physiology), Karl von Rokitansky (pathological anatomy), Joseph Škoda and Johann von Oppolzer (internal medicine), Franz Schuh (surgery), Ferdinand von Hebra ( Dermatology) and from Sighisoara originating Karl Ludwig Sigmund (Venereology). Gusbeth received his doctorate on March 22, 1864 and then became a master's degree in obstetrics and a doctorate in surgery. From September 1864 to January 1865 Gusbeth worked as a secondary doctor in a psychiatric hospital in Vienna. Then he returned to Kronstadt and opened a practice for internal and external diseases. In the summer months Gusbeth worked as a spa doctor in Zajzon. In a diary he kept for many years, he made entries about the patients he had examined inside and outside the city and later added brief biographies of these patients. He was nicknamed “Powder Doctor” because he introduced the prescription of chemical substances in Kronstadt instead of prescribing plant mixtures and herbal teas. For several years he was chairman of the city's medical commission. As the administrative authorities did not make any of the proposed improvements to the sanitary conditions, he eventually resigned from this post. Gusbeth wrote numerous articles for the purpose of sanitary education of the population. In 1911, on the occasion of the 62nd meeting of the “Society of Kronstadt Friends of Nature”, he gave a “Lecture on the smallest living things” with information on the pathogens of smallpox, plague, cholera and diphtheria. When the young doctors had to go to the front during the First World War, Gusbeth and the few remaining doctors in the city took over the medical care of the population. At the time he was already 75 years old. Gusbeth was buried in the "inner city cemetery" of his hometown.

The Kronstadt State Archives preserve 40 volumes of the diary of Drs from the holdings of the former library of the Honterus Gymnasium. Eduard Gusbeth for the period from June 13, 1875 to September 13, 1919, which the researcher Camelia Neagoe worked through in the years up to 2014.

Honor

Shortly before the 50th anniversary of the doctoral degree, doctors from Kronstadt and Burzenland approached the University of Vienna with the request to renew the doctoral degree that had been awarded 50 years ago. With these honorary degrees, the seal of the university was in a golden capsule and was therefore referred to as the "golden doctoral degree". This doctoral degree from Gusbeth is now kept in the archive of the Black Church in Kronstadt.

Activity as a medical historian

In 1882, as President of the Medical Commission, Gusbeth was asked to clarify the situation regarding the establishment of a pharmacy that the population wanted. Gusbeth began to study the works in the library of the Honterus grammar school and in the city archive that reported on the sanitary conditions in the city, which had been ravaged by the plague several times. He was interested in the history of doctors and hospitals in Kronstadt. He collected data on the geography, geology and climate in Kronstadt, as well as on the birth rate and the death rate. With the collected data he put together the book "On the history of the medical conditions in Kronstadt". The proceeds from the book, which was printed in 1884, went to the Honterusgymnasium.
