Arnold Norbert Burgmann

Arnold Norbert Burgmann SVD (born July 10, 1909 in Dinslaken , † July 17, 1987 in Bonn-Beuel ) was a German priest, missionary and ethnologist.

Life

The son of August Burgmann and Emma Burgmann, b. Weißgerber, entered the mission high school of the Steyler missionaries in Steyl in 1921 . There he passed the Abitur in 1929. After completing his novitiate and studying philosophy and theology at the PTH St. Augustin , he was ordained a priest in 1935. In 1936 he moved into the St. Gabriel Mission House and studied ethnology, prehistory and physical anthropology at the University of Vienna with Wilhelm Schmidt , Wilhelm Koppers and Oswald Menghin . In 1937 he moved to the University of Hamburg, where he studied general linguistics, experimental phonetics, Austronesian languages ​​and ethnology for four semesters. After receiving his doctorate in 1939 with Walther Aichele , August Klingenoben and Otto Dempwolff , he was a pastor in Wyler and Zyfflich from 1941 to 1946 . From 1946 to 1949 he taught ethnology and linguistics at the PTH St. Augustin. From 1949 he worked at the Anthropos Institute in Froideville VD . Until 1968 he was editor-in-chief of Anthropos magazine . In 1962/1963 he organized the move of the Anthropos Institute to Sankt Augustin . From 1968 to 1974 he was the rector of the St. Augustine Missionary Seminary . Then he worked pastorally in St. Maria Königin in Sankt Augustin-Ort .
