Arnold Meyer Spielberg (born February 6, 1917 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † August 25, 2020 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American electrical engineer .

Life

Spielberg was the son of Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire ; his father Samuel came from Kamianets-Podilskyj , his mother Rebecca from Sudylkiv . He was a radio amateur in his youth and served in the US Signal Corps during World War II and later in the US Air Force in India (he was a radio operator and gunner in B-25 bombers and was appointed head of radio communications for his squadron because of his technical skills) . After the war he studied electrical engineering at the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree. He then went to RCA in the Advanced Development department in 1949 . In addition to RCA, he worked for General Electric , IBM and Scientific Data Systems in Cincinnati, Phoenix in Arizona , Detroit and from 1963 in California (Orange County, San José, San Francisco Bay Area). In 1991 he retired.

At RCA, he initially dealt with automatic control systems. When the company turned to computer technology, he designed logic circuits and dealt with hardware system design, for example one of the first database query systems for data recording on magnetic tapes. He was promoted to manager in the department and led the development of an online billing system ( Point of Sale ) with a central computer (Recorder Central) and ten satellite computers connected to it. It had many of the essential properties of modern electronic cash systems and was way ahead of its time (1954), but was still prone to failure.

In 2006 he received the Computer Pioneer Award for contributions to real-time data acquisition and storage, which significantly shaped the characteristics of modern feedback and control processes .

In retirement, he worked for his son Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation, among others . In 2012 he received the Shoah Foundation Institute's first ever Inspiration Award .

Spielberg was married for the third time. His children from his first marriage to Leah Posner (1920–2017) are Steven (* 1946), Anne (* 1949), Susan (* 1953) and Nancy (* 1956). Spielberg died of natural causes on August 25, 2020 at the age of 103.
