Arrigo Cappelletti

Arrigo Cappelletti (born February 12, 1949 in Brunate ) is an Italian pianist and composer of modern jazz , as well as a music teacher, writer and essayist.

Live and act

Cappelletti received music lessons from his grandfather, a composer. He studied philosophy at the University of Milan and also taught in this subject. After a few years he switched to music and began to publish his first albums under his own name for the jazz label Splas (c) h in the 1980s ; first album was "Residui", which he recorded in 1982 with his trio in Bologna . In Italy he worked a. a with Gianni Cazzola , Sergio Fanni , Paolino Dalla Porta , Roberto Ottaviano , Gianni Coscia , Giorgio Visibelli and Sandro Cerino ; also with internationally known musicians such as Barre Phillips , Lew Soloff , Michael Mossman , Daniel Schnyder , Bill Elgart , Steve Swallow and Jeff Hirshfield . He also accompanied the singer Mia Martini and played in Giorgio Gaslini's Italian Jazz Orchestra . In 1988 the American magazine Cadence chose his album "Reflections" as one of the ten best albums of the year.

From the end of the 1980s he worked with his trio with tango jazz and combined jazz with folk music influences, such as Portuguese fado music. He now lives in Portugal , where he works with many Portuguese fado artists, such as Custódio Castelo and Jorge Fernando . In the music project Terras do risco , he wrote songs to the texts of Portuguese poets of the 20th century. In Russia , where he stayed for a while, he worked with the singer Polina Runovskaya .

His main influences include Cappelletti John Lewis , Lennie Tristano , Bill Evans and Paul Bley .

Cappelletti is also active as a writer and essayist; he wrote Il profumo del Jazz , a book on jazz improvisation (published by ESI - Naples), and a work on Paul Bley, la logica del caso (published by LEPOS - Palermo). He also teaches jazz at various cultural institutions such as Nuova Milano Musica in Milan, the Brera Institute in Novara, the Conservatory in Sassari and Reggio di Calabria. He worked as a jazz piano teacher at the Conservatoire of Alessandria and Venice .
