Arthur Brown (born June 24, 1942 in Whitby , England ) is a British rock singer . Brown has a voice that spans several octaves.

biography

Arthur Brown appeared on international rock stages in the late 1960s. He drew attention to himself through eccentric demonstrations, with burning helmets and naked appearances. His debut album, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown , named after his band at the time , was a surprise success on both sides of the Atlantic in 1968 . At the reception were Carl Palmer (drums, later Emerson, Lake & Palmer ), Vincent Crane ( Keyboard , later Atomic Rooster ) and Pete Townshend (of The Who ) is involved as a producer. The single Fire became a worldwide success.

In the 1970s, Brown released three albums under the name Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come : Galactic Zoo Dossier , Kingdom Come and Journey . The latter was possibly the first album to feature a drum machine .

In 1974 Brown temporarily withdrew from the music business to devote himself to meditation. However, he took part in the filming of the rock opera Tommy , along with The Who , Eric Clapton , Tina Turner and Elton John .

Brown later recorded several solo albums and sang the lead vocalist on The Tell Tale Heart on the Alan Parsons Project's Tales Of Mystery And Imagination concept album , based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe . In 1978/79 he recorded the albums Dune and Time Actor ( Richard Wahnfried ) with Klaus Schulze and accompanied him on tour (heard on the track Dymagic on Live ).

In 1994 Brown suffered a stroke during a concert from which he struggled to recover. In 1997 he produced a new recording of his hit Fire with the German band Die Krupps .

The Kingdom Come albums have often been compared to the music of Hawkwind . Brown was also with most former members of Hawkwind on the album Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters of Robert Calvert involved. In 2001 and 2002 Brown performed a few times with Hawkwind, with the band also performing songs by Arthur Brown, including those from the Kingdom Come albums.

In recent years Arthur Brown has appeared repeatedly around the Pretty Things and also performed frequently with them. Brown was seen and heard as the narrator of the live performance of the rock opera SF Sorrow of Pretty Things in 1998.

In 2011 and 2012 he toured Germany with Chris Farlowe and the Hamburg Blues Band .
