Arthur C. Cope

Arthur Clay Cope (born June 27, 1909 in Dunreith , Indiana , USA , † June 4, 1966 in Washington, DC ) was an American chemist and professor of organic chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge .

Cope was at the 1932 University of Wisconsin-Madison with Samuel M. McElvain with the theme The synthesis of local anesthetics Containing various phenylalkyl groups: vinylethyl malonic ester and the cleavage of Certain substituiertem malonic ester with sodium ethoxide Ph.D.

His field of work was preparative organic chemistry, especially elimination and condensation reactions . The Cope rearrangement and the Cope elimination were named after him. Other areas of work were barbiturates and the synthesis of unsaturated esters .

In 1945 Cope was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1947 to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1961 to the American Philosophical Society . The American Chemical Society presents the Arthur C. Cope Award in his honor .
