Arthur George Perkin
Arthur George Perkin (born December 13, 1861 in Sudbury near London , † May 30, 1937 in Leeds ) was a British chemist.
He was the son of William Henry Perkin and experimented in his private laboratory as a teenager. He studied chemistry from 1878 at the Royal College of Chemistry in London, from 1880 at Anderson's College in Glasgow (now University of Strathclyde ) and in 1881 in the dyes department of Yorkshire College in Leeds (later the University of Leeds ). From 1882 he worked for the dye company Hardmann & Holden in Manchester, which he headed from 1888. In 1892 he went to Yorkshire College as a lecturer and research chemist for dyes and became a professor there in 1916. In 1926 he retired, but remained scientifically active.
He was involved in the isolation and elucidation of the structure of many natural dyes such as quercetin , luteolin , apigenin , morin , catechin , gossypetin , myricetin . From 1905 to 1907 he worked on indican and other indigo dyes.
In 1924 he received the Davy Medal . In 1893 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 1903 the Royal Society of London .
His brother William Henry Perkin Jr. was also a chemistry professor.
