Arthur Schiess

Arthur Schiess (born September 19, 1842 in Herisau ; † August 8, 1917 in Schwende ; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss entrepreneur from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Arthur Schiess was the son of Johann Jakob Schmid, Colonel and co-founder of the Herisau embroidery and fabric trading company Zahner & Schiess & Companie, and Elise Schefer.

Schiess first completed a commercial apprenticeship in the Cologne branch of his father's company . He then spent seven years abroad in London , Paris and New York City . From the end of the 1860s, Schiess managed the export business in his father's company . In 1873 he became a partner. Schiess built up the important fabric trading department. This was moved to St. Gallen in 1883 . Schiess also settled in St. Gallen. He soon became known for his charitable donations . During his lifetime he made it possible to build the Kreckelhof educational institution and the cantonal sanatorium and nursing home in Herisau . With testamentary donations of 3 million francs, he laid the basis for old-age and disability insurance for the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Arthur-Schiess-Strasse in Herisau was named after him.
