Arthur Schmidt (born October 25, 1895 in Hamburg ; † November 5, 1987 there ) was a German lieutenant general .

Life

Schmidt fought in the First World War as a platoon leader and company commander in the infantry regiment "Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau" (1st Magdeburg) No. 26 . After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr .

In World War II Schmidt held several staff positions. From October 1940 to March 25, 1942, he was Chief of Staff of the 5th Army Corps of the Wehrmacht . On May 15, 1942, he became Chief of the General Staff of the 6th Army . In this capacity he was appointed major general on June 1, 1942 and took part in the Battle of Stalingrad . In the final stages of the battle he largely took over command of the army. On January 6, 1943, he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross . On January 17th he was promoted to lieutenant general.

Schmidt came on 31 January 1943 together with Field Marshal Paul in the department store "Univermag" in Stalingrad in Soviet captivity , first in the POW camp 5110/48 Woikowo , then in prison Lubyanka . In 1955 he was released from captivity.
