Arthur silence

Gustaf Arthur Henrik Stille (born July 16, 1863 in Osby , † April 19, 1922 in Lund ) was a Swedish historian .

Stille studied at the University of Lund , where he in 1889 with a dissertation on the politics of Denmark during the Polish war by Charles XII. PhD. In 1892 he became a teacher at the private elementary school in Lund, where he also wrote encyclopedia articles for a Danish encyclopedia, in 1905 he became a lecturer at the high school in Lund (the current cathedral school), from 1895 he worked at the university and in 1908 he became a professor at Lund University.

He made a name for himself primarily as a military historian for the time of Karl XII. One of his most important works was his book on the strategy of Charles XII. in the campaign against Russia (1708/09) , which was considered to be groundbreaking. He based his research on precise topographical knowledge and his pupil Carl Bennedich (1880-1939, officer in the general staff and teacher at the War College ) was the editor of the basic Swedish general staff study on the campaigns of Karl XII in 1918/19.

He also undertook extensive preliminary studies for a history of the years of Charles XII. in exile in Turkey , but never got around to publishing a book.

He was secretary of the Karolinska förbundet from 1910 and editor of its yearbooks until his death.
