Carl Bennedich

Carl Bennedich (born June 5, 1880 in Falkenberg , † March 3, 1939 in Linköping ) was a Swedish officer and military historian .

Bennedich, the son of a carpenter, was a lieutenant from 1906 and a staff adjutant from November 1914 and then a captain in the general staff . In 1922 he became a major and in 1926 a lieutenant colonel . From 1916 to 1920 he was a teacher at the War College . In 1919 he became captain of the life guard. From 1922 to 1928 he headed the history department in the General Staff. He was last a colonel .

He was a pupil of Arthur Stille (he created the maps for his 1908 book about the strategy of Karl XII in Russia) and gave the history of the campaigns of Karl XII in 1918/19. of the Swedish General Staff (where he was also the main author). The creation was by the head of the General Staff General KG Bildt on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Karl XII. has been decided. Bennedich had visited the battlefields of the Northern War in Russia in 1911 on a study trip , including Poltava (he also traveled to Finland to study the conquest of the country by Sweden in the first half of the 17th century).

In 1914 he interfered in Swedish politics by writing a speech with Sven Hedin for the king, who expressed conservative protests against the disarmament policy of the liberal government under Karl Staaff (in particular the cut in the program of dreadnought-class battleships) . It was held by the king at a large protest rally by conservative farmers in the courtyard of Stockholm Palace , became known as Borggårdstalet and sparked a domestic political crisis (Borggårdskrisen).

In 1926 he published a history of the Swedish life guard ( Livgarde ).

His widow later moved to Falkenberg and died in 1953. He had two sons. His son Carol Bennedich (1905-1994) was a colonel and from 1944 to 1948 a military attaché in Moscow. During this time he was also involved in the affair surrounding the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg . In 1965/66 he was head of the Swedish Monitoring Commission in Korea.
