Life

He moved to Melbourne with his family at the age of seven. Due to his artistic talent, he became an apprentice in the lithographic institute of George Troedel and Co. At the same time, he began evening studies at the National Gallery School of Design and, for a short time, at the School of Painting .

William Turner and the Australian painter Thomas William Roberts , who after his return from studying art in England in Australia in 1885, spread impressionism in Australia , are counted among his models . A group of young artists was formed in a Melbourne pub, the so-called Heidelberg School . In 1888 he ended his life as a lithographer and only successfully devoted himself to painting. Streeton first traveled to London and Europe in 1897 . Here too he was successful. In 1900 he was able to exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts and in 1903 became a member of the Chelsea Arts Club . In 1909 he received a gold medal at the Paris Salon .

During his stays in England he developed great patriotic feelings, so that he volunteered for the First World War in 1915 . As a medic he served with the rank of corporal in a London military hospital. In February 1917 he was finally retired due to health problems. He was appointed an official war painter of the Imperial Australian Forces with the rank of lieutenant and from May 1918 painted behind the front in France . In 1919 he returned to Australia and devoted himself to painting as well as art criticism. In 1928 Streeton won the Wynne Prize . In 1937 he was beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree .

After his death in 1943, he was buried in Fern Tree Gully Cemetery. His contemporaries saw his Impressionist works as products of the sun and earth of his country. His works, which have always been successful, now fetch prices in the millions of euros.
