Career

Arthur Tanner started his recording career in 1925 with Columbia Records , where his brother Gid was also under contract. His first recording session took place on January 27, 1925 in Atlanta , where the pieces Floella's Cottage and Knoxville Girl were recorded. The cast consisted of Arthur Tanner and his brother Gid. However, both titles were not published by Columbia. He then recorded a number of tracks for Paramount Records . He produced other titles over the next four years, his first release being Devilish Mary. The records were sold as Arthur Tanner and his Corn Shuckers . The regular line-up of this group was Arthur Tanner ( vocals , guitar), Gid Tanner (fiddle, banjo) and Fate Norris (banjo), and sometimes Riley Puckett or Clayton McMichen . Along with Gid and Fate Norris, Tanner also released records as Gid Tanner's Georgia Boys. Some of the recordings that Tanner made at Paramount were re-released on their sublabels Puritan Records , Herwin Records and Silvertone Records . In the 1920s, Tanner could also be heard with Earl Johnson on the WSB radio station in Atlanta, occasionally as Georgia Wildcats.

In 1934, Tanner was a banjo player at the last session of the Skillet Lickers . These pieces were the last that he recorded. However, Tanner was still publicly represented at events and performed with his brother, among others. Gid Tanner's son Arthur recalled: "They played it from the stage and setting around the house ... It would tear the audience up."

retreat

In the years after his career as a musician, Tanner went on to pursue his profession as a painter, which he had already done before. He was married to Leita Allgood and had two sons, James and Hugh Lee. Arthur Tanner died on February 22, 1972 at the age of 69 at his Winder, Georgia home.
