Arthur Whistler

Wayne Arthur Whistler (born October 12, 1944 in San Bernardino County , † April 2, 2020 in Honolulu ), known as W. Arthur Whistler , was an American ethnobotanist who dealt primarily with the fauna and ethnobotany of the Pacific island world . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Whistler ".

Life

The Whistler, who grew up in southern California , first studied at the University of California, Riverside, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree . He then completed his master's degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara . From 1968 to 1970 he worked in the Peace Corps , during which time he taught biology. He then earned a doctorate from the University of Hawaii in 1979 . He then taught botany at this university. This was followed by a nine-year job as an ethnobotanist at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai . He then founded the consulting company Isle Botanica with which he carried out numerous projects in the South Seas. Whistler also worked as an adjuncted professor .

He discovered the tree species Aneilima vitiense in Samoa .

Whistler had visited Washington State during the developing COVID-19 pandemic in the United States and fell ill on March 2, 2020. He returned to Hawaii on March 4th. Despite showing symptoms of a SARS-CoV-2 infection, he wasn't tested until March 7th. It was considered the second confirmed case of Corona in Hawaii. Whistler passed away in a hospital early in the morning on April 2. He was the first victim of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hawaii .
