Arturia is a manufacturer of hardware and software in the field of music production founded in 1999 by Frédéric Brun and Gilles Pommereuil, based in Grenoble , France . The company is best known for its software synthesizers, which recreate the classic sound of analog synthesizers from the 1970s. Hardware synthesizers, MIDI controllers , audio interfaces, drum computers and software synthesizers for iPad are also produced.

history

The company's first product on the market was the Storm software synthesizer , which was designed as a low-cost device. Using the algorithms they developed, Arturia engineers have been working since 2003 to develop digital synthesizers with an authentic analog sound. Together with Robert Moog they developed the Modular V. Further software replicas of historical instruments followed, including the Minimoog V, which was very popular with specialist magazines and users, the ARP 2600 V and the Wurlitzer V. The emulation technology is known as TAE (True analog emulation) protected.

In the following years the hardware market was also penetrated. In 2009, Origin was a hardware synthesizer that allowed parts of known instruments, such as oscillators or filters , to be freely combined. It was offered until 2014. The Keylab keyboards sold since 2010 are pure MIDI controllers, which are intended to make the software synthesizers on offer easier to use and play.

In 2011, Spark was released, a digital drum computer whose software runs on a connected computer and whose variously editable sounds are fed by samples and changeable synthesizers. Entering the rhythms is possible in the style of a 909 (by activating the time stamps) or MPC (recording of key sequences). Successor models are the smaller Spark LE and the Spark 2 (Jan. 2014).

From 2012 Arturia opened the Brute line, which consists of fully analog, monophonic hardware synthesizers. The first model in this series was the MiniBrute, which was created in collaboration with the designer Axel Hartmann and is characterized by its small size and characteristic "scratchy" sound. The 12 dB / Oct Steiner Parker filter used there and designed by Yves Usson was designed in consultation with Nyle Steiner. The successor device was Microbrute reduced to a functional minimum (a complex oscillator and only one ADSR envelope for filter and amplifier). In 2016, Arturia presented the MatrixBrute at the NAMM Show , the main features of which are two oscillators based on the MiniBrute and a 16x16 modulation matrix similar to the EMS VCS 3 , but which also has other components. In 2017, an analog rhythm synthesizer was added with the DrumBrute, which can simultaneously generate twelve of the 17 changeable drum sounds. The second generation of the Minibrute followed in 2018, which is characterized by a second LFO , a patchbay with 28 inputs and 20 outputs and a second oscillator that can be used additively, as an additional LFO or as a modulator in terms of frequency modulation . This Minibrute 2 is available in a version with keyboard and arpeggiator or as Minibrute 2s with a built-in four-track sequencer. Both versions can be expanded to a modular synthesizer with the help of the Rackbrute (modular housing with carrying aid) that appeared at the same time .

In 2014 Arturia opened up a further customer base with the simple 16-step- step sequencer Beatstep , which controls music devices and synthesizers via MIDI and control voltage, but can also be used as a general MIDI controller . The model, which was expanded to Beatstep Pro in 2015, has two parallel melody tracks and a 16-track rhythm section with 64 steps each, all of which control 10 analog or 18 digital signal receivers. An additional clock and a number of other functionalities make it a control center for performances. Because adjust note values with knobs is not natural for musicians, brought Arturia 2016 nor the Keystep serving as mini-keyboard, polyphonic for sequencers, arpeggiator and input help chords work.

In 2015 Arturia introduced its audio interface called Audio Fuse.

Arturia released the first newly designed software synthesizer that was not based on historical devices in December 2018 with the Pigments. Its structure essentially follows subtractive sound synthesis , but the two sound sources are optionally wavetable oscillators , triples of virtual analog oscillators and, since version 2.0 (December 2019), granular oscillators . The two parallel or serial filters can also switch between different modes (high, low, band pass, formant, comb).
