The Asamkirche (officially St. Maria de Victoria Church ) is a baroque church in Ingolstadt , which was designed by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam during the height of their creative period.

history

With the laying of the foundation stone on April 30, 1732, construction of the building designed as a meeting room and oratory of the Marian Student Congregation of the University of Ingolstadt began. The foundation stone was laid by the then rector of the university, Max Ignaz von Planckh. The congregation was founded in 1577 by the Jesuit college in Ingolstadt and initially had its prayer room in the college. With the dissolution of the Jesuit order , the student union should now have its own oratory. The architect of the building was Egid Quirin Asam , while Michael Anton Prunthaler was the city mason. In 1733 the facades and a year later the interior were stuccoed. On July 1, 1736, the benediction took place. In the course of the relocation of the university to Landshut and as a result of the secularization , the Bavarian Elector Maximilian IV Joseph donated the building to the city of Ingolstadt. In 1807 the congregational hall was elevated to a church.

Furnishing

Lepantomon strance

While the exterior of the Asam Church is designed in the Baroque style, the furnishings predominantly show features of the Rococo . The central theme of the 490 square meter ceiling painting is the Incarnatio Dominica, the Incarnation of the Lord. The current altar probably dates from around 1760 and probably replaced an older one. The altarpiece dates to 1675 and is therefore older than the “Maria de Victoria” church. It shows the Annunciation to Maria and was created by the Landshut artist Franz Geiger.

The so-called lepantomon strance is kept in the sacristy of the Asam church . It was designed in 1708 by the Augsburg goldsmith Johannes Zeckl and shows the sea battle of Lepanto in an unparalleled wealth of detail . Due to its artistic design, it is considered the most valuable monstrance in the world. Next to it, in the sacristy, is the so-called Tilly Cross, a cross that the general Johann t'Serclaes von Tilly supposedly carried with him on his campaigns.

organ

organ

The organ of the Asamkirche goes back to an instrument that was built in 1987 by the organ builder Georg Jann (Laberweinting). With a view to the gravity required for the church interior, the instrument was restored in 2006 by the organ manufacture Kuhn (Männedorf, Switzerland) and the disposition slightly changed. The main work received two new stops instead of the previous quintade 8 ′, which was omitted, and the oboe 8 ′, which is now in the back work. It replaces the former Scharf III 1 ′, which was no longer available. In the pedal a new reed register 16 'was inserted, for which the former peasant flute 2' was omitted.

The instrument has slide chests, the playing and stop actions are mechanical. It stands in a historic case that was created by Caspar König in 1736 .
