Ashland is a city in Boyd County in the US state of Kentucky , on the banks of the Ohio River with 21,684 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of 31.6 km².
Ashland is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Huntington-Ashland, which in 2000 had a population of 288,649.
history
The first settlement on the site of the present city, Poage's Landing , was established in 1786. It received its current name in 1854. It developed in the late 19th century thanks to the steel industry , and an oil refinery was built later . The Federal Correctional Institution, Ashland has been in the city since 1940 .
Attractions
The Paramount Arts Center cinema building was built in 1931 in the Art Deco style and was used for screenings until 1971. The building was renovated in 1972 and 2002 and now serves as a cultural center. It is a listed building .
