geography
Askwith is not far from the West Yorkshire border , about 5 kilometers east of the spa town of Ilkley and about 4 kilometers northwest of the small town of Otley . The nearest big city is Leeds, 20 kilometers away .
The place is in Wharfedale, a valley of the Yorkshire Dales . Several streams flow near it, such as the East Beck and West Beck, which flow south into the River Wharfe . The landscape is characterized by moors .
history
Askwith is mentioned in the Domesday Book created in 1086 . There Gospatric, Berenger of Tosny and William of Percy are named as owners of the land. The place belonged to the Parish Weston and the Wapentake Upper Claro. Its name is of Scandinavian origin and is derived from the Old Norse words askr (ash tree) and vithr (tree, forest). Variations of this were Ascvid (1086), Ascwyth, Askwith and Askewith (1285-1316) and Askwyth (1320).
