features

Fern asparagus is a dioecious, evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 50 to 70 (rarely up to 150) centimeters and possibly forms a rhizome . The stem is angular and upright. The branches are arranged in horizontal planes, which makes the plant look like a fern. The dummy leaves are flat, curved and measure 6 to 20 × 0.8 to 2 millimeters. They are arranged in 2 to 8 at the node. The scale leaves are hardened at the bottom, but not thorny. There are usually 1 to 3 flowers per node. The inflorescence is 2 to 3 millimeters long, the flower stalk 1 to 2 centimeters. The berries are 5 to 6 millimeters in diameter and black-green.

The flowering period extends from August to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, 18 or 20.

Occurrence

Fern asparagus occurs in the eastern Himalayas in India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand as well as southwest and central China in shady, moist forests in valleys at altitudes of 1200 to 3000 meters.

use

Fern asparagus is rarely used as an ornamental plant for cut flowers and as a cut green. The species came into culture after 1880.
