The motor ferry Romanshorn is a car ferry on the Friedrichshafen – Romanshorn ferry line . It was the first Swiss motor ferry on Lake Constance and is now the last remaining Lake Constance ferry under the Swiss flag and the oldest ferry on this line.

history

After the resumption of rail transport in 1948, the transport of freight wagons across Lake Constance was dependent on non-motorized barges and the Schussen . To expand the transport capacity, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) decided to have a ferry built at the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on Lake Constance .

The launch of the motor ferry took place on November 6, 1958 in Kressbronn. In contrast to the Schussen , the ferry , which was commissioned as MF Romanshorn in 1958, was a double-ended ferry from the start . Until 1976 the Romanshorn served as a ferry for combined freight wagons and automobiles. In 1976 it was converted into a pure car ferry.

In 1996 the entire SBB ship operation with shipyard and facilities was privatized. The Swiss Bodensee-Schiffahrtsgesellschaft AG (SBS AG) was born. In 2007 the SBB sold the shipping to a private investor group.

The Romanshorn , together with the Euregia and Friedrichshafen, follows the tradition of the railway ferry service on Lake Constance, which opened in 1869. As car ferries, they now operate year-round in scheduled service.
