Astatotilapia tchadensis is a species of cichlid that occurs in the north of Chad , in the middle of the Sahara , in Lake Bokou ( Ounianga Lakes ). The species was only described in 2016. A closely related, previously undescribed species occurs in the catchment area of Lake Chad , in Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger and the Central African Republic.

features

Astatotilapia tchadensis becomes about 10 cm long and has the typical beefy shape of a haplochromine cichlid . Characteristic features of the species are a black stripe that runs from the eye to the corner of the mouth and round, orange egg spots in the anal fin of adult males. The body of the fish is covered with comb scales. The jaw teeth of the outer rows are two-pointed, those of the inner rows are three-pointed. The lower branch of the first gill arch carries 7 to 8 gill rakes . In the lower dentition of the pharyngeal there are large, molar-shaped teeth in the middle row. The sideline is accompanied by 29 to 30 scales. 16 scales are counted around the tail stalk.

habitat

Two thirds of the surface of Lake Boukou are covered with reeds ( Phragmites australis ), the sedge Cyperus laevigatus and the cattail Typha australis . In the rest of the lake, among other things, spawning herbs ( Potamogeton ) grow .
