Astrid Kafka-Lützow

Astrid Kafka-Lützow (born March 28, 1937 in Dohna ; † February 19, 2018 ) was a German - Austrian physiologist and university professor .

Life

Astrid Kafka-Lützow fled the GDR in 1949 and attended the Allgäu high school in Kempten as well as the high schools in Kempten and Wuppertal. She studied medicine in Vienna and worked in Wilhelm Auerswald's laboratory . After receiving her doctorate in 1964, she became an assistant doctor at the Institute for General and Comparative Physiology. Kafka-Lützow also carried out research at the Carl Ludwig Institute for Physiology at the University of Leipzig , the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London and at the National Eye Institute of the National Institute of Health . After her habilitation on functional examinations of the retina of the eye in 1971, she worked at the Wilhelminenspital . In 1981 Kafka-Lützow became professor of physiology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna . She was also head of the Institute for General and Comparative Physiology and from 1999 to 2002 dean of the medical faculty. In 2005 she retired . In 2000 she was named Teacher of the Year . She was also President of the Austrian Physiological Society and Honorary Senator of the Medical University of Vienna as well as an honorary member of the Austrian Society for Occupational Medicine .

During her studies, Kafka-Lützow researched the physiology of hemostasis and lipid metabolism . She later devoted herself to the functioning of the retina and developed the model of the isolated retina. In the field of work physiology , she dealt with the optimal lighting conditions, also with regard to screen work .
