The astropeiler Stockert near Eschweiler in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Euskirchen is a radio telescope with a mirror diameter of 25 m on the Stockert mountain in the Eifel .
Geographical location
The Astropeiler Stockert is in the Eifel part of Münstereifeler Wald at 433.9 m above sea level. NHN high mountain Stockert - directly east of its summit. It is located between Eschweiler and Holzheim , in the outer west of the district of Bad Münstereifel, Eschweiler.
About 110 m east-southeast of the astropeil is a 10-meter mirror, which is also operated from the astropiler. Another radio telescope, the Effelsberg radio telescope with a mirror diameter of 100 m, is located 12.4 km (as the crow flies ) southeast near Effelsberg .
history
Germany's first radio telescope was built on the Stockert from 1955 to 1956 with the Stockert astropiler (also called Stockert Radio Observatory ) . It was inaugurated on September 17, 1956. The telescope mirror is 25 m in diameter and weighs 90 tons.
In its history, the astropiler was mainly used to research the 21 cm and 11 cm bands, among other things for several surveys and for continuum measurements. The system also played a role in the development of new reception technology, which was tested here.
Until 1993, the University of Bonn and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy used the system, from 1979 no longer for research purposes, but for the training of students.
In 1997 the Astropeiler was taken over by the then digital audio company creamware and used until 2004 as a source of inspiration and for their Woodstockert music festivals.
Since 1999, the facility is available as an industrial monument under monument protection . The owner has been the NRW Foundation since 2005 . The system is looked after by a local development association.
On May 2, 2010, the radio telescope was ceremoniously reopened in the presence of members of the NRW Foundation, the deputy district administrator of the Euskirchen district , the mayor of Bad Münstereifel and representatives of the local parties. Before that, there were four years of intensive voluntary restoration by numerous members of the friends' association, who - in addition to the contracted companies - contributed significantly to the re-use of the astropiler and ensure its future preservation either through manual skills or assistance in the field of science, hardware and software or documentation. Scientific work is still being carried out on the radio telescope, specifically in use as an extracurricular learning location . Interested teachers are first briefed on the subject on site, and are thus able to pass this knowledge on to their students themselves at the astropeiler. Members of the friends' association who z. B. composed of radio amateurs , amateur astronomers or even some scientifically active radio astronomers, are by their side.
