The Asuka II is a cruise ship sailing under the flag of Japan . The ship was built in 1990 as Crystal Harmony for the shipping company Crystal Cruises . It is a sister ship to the Crystal Symphony .

history

The launching of the ship took place on 30 September 1989 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries -Werft in Nagasaki , Japan. After the equipment and the final expansion, the ship began its cruise service in July 1990. The construction costs amounted to approximately US $ 240 million.

On February 26, 2006 the ship was handed over to the subsidiary Nippon Yūsen Kaisha with the renaming in Asuka II ("The Flying Bird"). Currently (as of April 2012) the Asuka II is the largest Japanese cruise ship.

Furnishing

The Asuka II has eight decks that are accessible to passengers. The ship offers two pools, eight bars, a casino and a fitness center. For the entertainment of the guests there is a theater with 277 seats on board. There are also 461 outside cabins, 260 of which have a balcony and 19 inside cabins.

Trivia

During the Crystal Harmony's maiden voyage through Caribbean waters, a fire broke out due to a leak in the engine system. The ship drifted through the sea for three days before being towed to a dry dock in Curaçao for repairs . The passengers on this cruise were brought ashore in Panama .

On May 11, 2000, a fire occurred in the ventilation shaft. The fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes. The ship was at the time in the port of Victoria and drove on the next day towards Vancouver . It was later discovered that the fire was caused by the failure of a generator's cooling system and the resulting overheating.
