Atanas Kareev

Atanas Kareev ( Bulgarian Атанас Кареев ; born March 23, 1945 in Varna , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian pianist .

Life

Kareev received his first piano lessons at the age of four from his mother, a pianist and piano professor at the Conservatory in Varna (Bulgaria). He made his debut in 1958 at the age of 12 with the Piano Concerto in D minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Kareev was a master student of Detlef Kraus at the Folkwang University in Essen . In 1975, he was among the graduates of the Beethoven - master classes , conducted by Wilhelm Kempff in Positano . In 1976 he passed his concert exam at the Folkwang University. Kareev regularly played concerts with orchestra and solo evenings in Europe and the USA . In his native Bulgaria he performed as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Sliven on. In 2006, on the occasion of the orchestra's sixtieth anniversary, he gave a concert with the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra at the opening concert of the International Summer Music Festival in Varna.

Numerous radio, record and CD productions have made him famous. Kareev made recordings with works by Ernest Bloch and Ludwig van Beethoven , including his Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2 ( The Storm ) and his Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 ( Appassionata ), by Frédéric Chopin and by Franz Liszt ( La Campanella , Tarantella , Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 ). In 1983 he recorded the piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgski in the original version for piano on LP for the Integral label . In 2009, the Japanese label Denon released piano concertos and preludes for violin and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich . Sonatas for violin and piano by Edward Elgar , Ernst von Dohnányi and George Enescu have also been published on the same label . Recordings by Bloch, Elgar and Shostakovich had previously been released in Germany , including in 1995 on the Aurophon label .

From 1980 he was head of the piano department at the Bergische Universität - Gesamthochschule in Wuppertal . He continues to teach piano there (as of December 2010) .

Kareev appears regularly as a soloist and, together with his wife Annette Kareev, as the piano duo Kareev . The repertoire includes works for piano four hands as well as for two pianos. In 2006 the piano duo Kareev gave the world premiere of the Amadeus Fantasy on a theme by Mozart for two pianos and orchestra by the Bulgarian composer Viktor Tschutschkow in the Philharmonie Essen . In February 2010 Kareev played with the piano duo Kareev at the Bad Wildungen Piano Days in Bad Wildungen .
