Studio 5

The Atelier 5 is one in 1955 Bern , founded Swiss architect community .

history

Founding members of Atelier 5 in 1955 were the five architects Erwin Fritz, Samuel Gerber, Rolf Hesterberg, Hans Hostettler and Alfredo Pini, to whom Niklaus Morgenthaler and Fritz Thormann joined shortly afterwards. Four of the five founding architects (Fritz, Hesterberg, Hostettler and Pini) previously worked for Hans Brechbühler in Bern from 1953 to 1955 . The Halen housing estate, which she realized in 1958–62, is considered a pioneering example of housing development after the Second World War . Building prototypes and working in a group are essential features of the office. In addition, there is the initially striking reference to Le Corbusier and the occupation with concrete as a building material that has continued since the office was founded. As a result, Atelier 5 was assigned to the New Brutalism movement in the 1970s .

However, this observation sticks to the surface. Atelier 5 can neither be fixed to the material concrete nor shortened to the maniera à Le Corbusier . Based on the basic attitude of the master, it has acquired its own complex architectural language over time, which is committed to the starting point modernity and is characterized by practical clarity and the renunciation of time-related phenomena (from postmodernism to fashion deconstructivism to today's new sensuality) . The Halen settlement - influenced by the La Sainte-Baume settlement project by Le Corbusier from 1948 - is one of the Swiss contributions to the architectural trend structuralism as well as New Brutalism .

In addition to other exemplary residential developments (Thalmatt, Ried, Hamburg-Rotherbaum, Dreikönigshöfe-Mainz), exemplary solutions were created in hospital construction (Spital Schwarzenburg), in building in historical surroundings (Bern administrative building, Potsdam Justice Center), in institutional and commercial buildings (Hypovereinsbank Luxembourg) and in urban development Work (Port-Libben Prague, Erfurt Ringelberg)

Working method

Atelier 5 stands for work that emerges from the dialogue, for work in a group in a field, that of architecture, which today is almost always associated with the concept of the author as the sole authority in the design process. A team is responsible for the design, which has to face an institutionalized criticism of the group, but remains autonomous in its decisions. There is no architecture by vote. The composition of the teams changes from task to task, so that over time everyone works with everyone and everyone is a team member and critic. Characteristic for Atelier 5 are:

  • the critical attitude towards the tasks set
  • the intensive examination of place and context
  • the interest in construction and structure
  • the precise determination of the relationship between private and communal, public space.
  • the emphasis on individual and community usefulness
  • the renouncement of formal gestures and architectural quotations.

The number of partners in Atelier 5 changes. It had increased to 18 in the 1970s. In 2019 there are 4, namely the architects: Gabriel Borter, Gianni Chini, Florian Lünstedt and Franco Petterino. As the author of the work, however, only studio 5 draws.
