The publisher Niggli is a Swiss specialist book publisher based in Salenstein specializing in architecture , design and typography .

history

After working in the book trade and publishing industry, Arthur Niggli (1923–2000) founded the publishing house in Teufen AR in Appenzell in 1950 . Classic Bauhaus disciplines such as typography and architecture were central to the publishing program . He published typographic textbooks by Emil Ruder , Josef Müller-Brockmann and Armin Hofmann , among others . Some titles appeared in up to ten editions, some were translated into several languages. The publishing house also published the series Lettera and Programs designed by Karl Gerstner (who created the publisher's logo).

In 1954 the publisher published the first German-language monograph on Paul Klee . Authors such as Walter Gropius , Pier Luigi Nervi , Le Corbusier , Venturi Rauch and many others are represented in Niggli's architecture program . In cooperation with the FSAI, the Association of Freelance Swiss Architects , the first edition of the Archithese was published in 1971 , which developed into an important architecture magazine in Switzerland.

In 1953 the first German-language book on Ikebana was published - originally written in English by Hiroshi Ohchi, translated into German by the publisher and translated back into English by an Englishman who did not understand the original version. In 1958, DADA - a monograph of a movement came onto the market, for which Arthur Niggli himself designed the cover. Art books by Richard Lindner and Christo were later published by Arthur Niggli - the signed, numbered original graphics by the two artists in the luxury edition were the first to be produced and sold in Europe in 1970.

In 1988 Bruno Waldburger took over the publishing house and archithesis from Arthur Niggli. Both became the property of Viktor Heer in 1992, at that time owner of Heer Druck AG in Sulgen TG; Bruno Waldburger remained the publishing director. After his death, he was followed in 1995 by the art historian J. Christoph Bürkle . Additional offices were opened in Zurich, and the program orientation was given a clearer profile with the areas of architecture, typography and design.

Arthur Niggli's international program, which is often bilingual or trilingual, has grown since 1992 thanks to new sales structures in the USA, Australia and Asia. The Niggli publishing house delivers around eighty percent of its books abroad. From 2003 to 2007 the publisher published the cultural magazine du , in 2007 Viktor Heer acquired Benteli Verlag with a focus on art, cultural history and photography of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In 2009 the publishing house became part of the bsmediagroup , which was founded in October of the same year by Markus Bättig and Daniel Stierli.

On October 1, 2014, Braun Publishing AG from Salenstein (Thurgau) acquired the Niggli and Benteli publishers, which are now run as independent imprints. Markus Sebastian Braun has been the publisher since then. The architecture magazine Archithese remained with bsmediagroup ag.
