Atheists in Austria

All atheists in Austria have in common that they live in Austria and realize or represent one or the other form of atheism .

History

In Austria, which is traditionally predominantly Catholic , there is no historically particularly strong tradition of atheism in international comparison. Most of the atheist organizations currently active in the territory of the Republic of Austria came into being in the 21st century - and especially in the 2010s.

Organizations

There are currently some active atheist organizations in Austria . These include (in alphabetical order): the Alliance for Humanism and Atheism (AHA), the Atheists Austria , the Atheistic Religious Society in Austria (ARG), the Atheist Republic Vienna Consulate , the evo association , the Giordano Bruno Regional Group Austria (GBRÖ) , the Humanist Association Austria (HVÖ), the laicists in the Seestadt and the Secular Refugee Aid Austria .

Alliance for Humanism and Atheism

The Alliance for Humanism and Atheism (AHA) is an atheistic organization in the Republic of Austria . The Alliance for Humanism and Atheism emerged from the Upper Austrian regional group of the Freethinkers Association Austria . It has been an independent association since 1988, which is registered in the ZVR under the name "Alliance for Humanism and Atheism" and is based in Linz .

Atheists Austria

The Atheists Austria Association is an atheistic organization in the territory of the Republic of Austria . The Atheists Austria Association was founded in 2018. It is registered under the name "Atheisten Österreich" in the ZVR , has its seat in Stallhofen in Styria and, with just under 30 members, is already one of the larger atheistic organizations in Austria.

The Atheistic Religious Society in Austria (ARG) is an atheistic organization on the territory of the Republic of Austria . It sees itself as an atheistic religious denominational community and would like to achieve full equality and recognition as a religious society in Austria in the long term and thus open up new spaces for cultural participation for atheists. The Atheistic Religious Society is currently the largest atheistic organization in Austria.

The Atheistic Religious Society project was founded around 2007. On December 30, 2019, the registration as a state-registered religious denominational community was applied for at the Kultusamt ; The registration process is currently underway at the Kultusamt according to the Confessional Community Act .

Religious teaching

The representation of religious doctrine required by the Confessional Communities Act can be found in Section 2 of the ARG statutes.

Interreligious Dialogue

Dialogue - including interreligious dialogue - plays an important role in the self-image of the atheist religious society. In religious doctrine it says: “Dialogue with others and people who think differently helps us to see and understand our own life in a broader context. By getting involved in other people's worlds, we transcend our own horizon of experience. ”Accordingly, the atheist religious society is also involved in interreligious dialogue.

In November 2016, members of the Presidium of the Atheist Religious Society wrote to Pope Francis suggesting that the Catechism of the Catholic Church be changed with regard to statements on atheism.

At the commemoration on September 20, 2018 in front of the memorial for the Austrian Jewish victims of the Shoah on Judenplatz in Vienna at the start of the 32nd International Old Catholics Congress 2018 in Vienna, a member of the executive committee of the Atheist Religious Society was welcomed among the guests of honor.

In Tyrol , a member of the presidium of the Atheistic Religious Society submitted a petition to the Tyrolean state parliament on the Martinsbühel home. This petition developed very quickly into the petition to the Tyrolean state parliament, which has by far been the most widely supported petition since September 2013.

On May 30, 2020, the Presidium of the Atheistic Religious Society issued a statement in the review process for the ministerial draft for a law introducing ethics instruction in Austria .

criticism

In a guest commentary in the press, the Protestant theologian Ulrich Körtner criticized the atheistic religious society as a representative of a new atheism , which "questions the elementary human right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion" and thus "in its consequences endangers freedom". This criticism was taken up by a board member of the Atheist Religious Society in a guest commentary in the weekly newspaper Die Furche .

The philosopher Konrad Paul Liessmann has also expressed criticism of the atheistic religious society in the NZZ and then in the Kleine Zeitung and the Neue Vorarlberger Tageszeitung .

Atheist Republic Vienna Consulate

Atheist Republic Vienna Consulate is an atheist organization in the territory of the Republic of Austria . Atheist Republic Vienna Consulate was created as part of the Atheist Republic Facebook community founded by Armin Navabi in 2019.

Association evo

The organization Verein evo (for evolution ) is an atheistic organization in the territory of the Republic of Austria . It was founded in 2011 and was initially active under the name gottlos.at .

Giordano Bruno regional group Austria

The Giordano Bruno Regional Group Austria (GBRÖ) is an atheistic organization in the territory of the Republic of Austria . It was created as the Austrian regional group of the Giordano Bruno Foundation . Since 2014 it has been an independent association, which is registered under the name "Giordano Bruno Regional Group Austria" in the ZVR and has its seat in Vienna .

The Secular Refugee Aid Austria is an atheistic organization in the territory of the Republic of Austria . It was founded around 2019.

Statistical

According to the results of the European Value Study 2018, around four percent of people living in Austria described themselves as "staunch atheists". That corresponds to around 352,800 people.

A listing of the "Atheist scene Austria" on the website of Atheists Austria shows that currently (May 2020) only a very small fraction of atheists in Austria are also members of an atheist organization in Austria.
