features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is around 60 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes , males and females have the same drawing elements . The basic color of the upper sides of the wings is black and, depending on the incidence of light, sometimes shimmers from a greenish to bluish tinge. A band made up of white spots extends over the disk region and also runs over the abdomen . Another, single white spot is in the cell . On the submarginal region of the upper side of the hind wing there is a series of white, mostly black centered circular spots. The fringes are alternately black and white piebald. A thin white line from the basal region to the cell runs parallel to the front edge on the upper side of the fore wing . On the red-brown to orange-brown undersides of the wings, the pattern of spots on the upper side shines through in a similar form.

Similar species

Athyma perius differs primarily in that the row of white spots on the upper side of the hind wing is not centered black, and the line on the upper side of the forewing parallel to the front edge is wider and mostly interrupted.

Pre-imaginal stages

The egg has a greenish color and a hemispherical shape. It is covered with hexagonal dimples over the entire surface from which short light hairs protrude. It is strongly flattened at the base.

The caterpillars hatch about four days after laying eggs. In their first stage they are predominantly gray-green to brownish in color and provided with short tubercles , which transform into branched thorns in the second stage and take on an elongated shape in the third and fourth stage. The fully grown caterpillar undergoes a comprehensive change in color: it takes on a strong green base color and is covered on the entire surface of the body with warts that are strong blue. On the fourth segment it shows two small, short, red, prickly crowns.

The pupa is predominantly brown in color, shows dark wing sheaths shortly before the moths hatch and has several horn-like growths on the back and back of the head. It is attached to branches or leaves as a falling doll .

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

Butterfly suckling on carcasses

The species occurs in India , Indonesia , Singapore , Myanmar , Nepal , in southeast China as well as on Taiwan and Palawan . Ten subspecies are currently classified in the various occurrence areas . Athyma asura prefers to colonize evergreen deciduous forests.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations a year. They very seldom visit flowers to eat, but sometimes they take in liquids and minerals in damp earthen areas, cadavers or excrement. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of holly plants (Aquifoliaceae) or Randia canthioides , one on the plant family of Rubiaceae counting (Rubiaceae) Art.
