Attalea dubia is a species of palm that occurs in the Mata Atlântica in eastern Brazil (Atlantic coast, states of Santa Catarina to Rio de Janeiro ). It often grows in the secondary foreston well-draining to stony slopes, where it can form dense stands under good conditions. However, it is less common in the primary forest .
In the language of the indigenous people of the region ( Tupí - Guaraní ) this palm is called Indaiá . The names of the Brazilian communities Indaiatuba and Indaial can be traced back to this name .
description
The palm reaches a height of 5 to 7 meters, in exceptional cases up to 25 meters. The trunk diameter is 20 to 35 cm. It has 20 to 30 (up to 35) pinnate leaves that are 2 to 3 meters long. The individual leaflets are arranged irregularly in groups on the axis and point in different directions. The inflorescences are between the leaves. The male flowers have flatly spreading petals and six to nine uncurved stamens . The fruit stands can reach a length of 1 to 1.5 meters. Between June and November it produces a large number of fruits that are edible and also serve as food for many animals. The fruits are 6 to 6.5 cm long, 3 cm in diameter and contain 1 to 2 seeds .
