occupation

Eye for an Eye is a German feature film directed by Mansour Ghadarkhah . The refugee drama was created in 1992, but was only shown in cinemas for the first time on October 1, 1993 due to censorship.

action

The film observes a refugee family who, after a difficult period of torture and rape in their dictatorial homeland, found refuge in the asylum dormitory in a major German city.

Hadi, Mona, their two daughters and Mona's father try to integrate themselves into daily life. But gloomy memories of a bad past and the longing for the familiar home, as well as for relatives and friends, do not allow the family to relax. A frightening incident involving skinheads upsets the entire dormitory.

Then Hadi has a fatal encounter. He believes he saw Nuri, the torturer from the prison where he and his family were tortured. All resolutions to build a reasonably normal and quiet life for yourself and your family and to start over have been destroyed.

background

The director Mansour Ghadarkhah fled Iran in 1979 after the mullahs came to power and had tried in vain for four years to get funding for his socially critical and realistic film project. He directed his film from the point of view of the torture victims and thus achieved a very oppressive effect. He also puts everyone to shame who only ever want to see asylum seekers in the Federal Republic as parasites.

The film was originally supposed to be shown at the Berlinale 1992, but since the riots and arson attacks in Hoyerswerda were still too topical, the premiere of the film was prevented with all their might. They wanted to put the work in the archive rather than on the canvas. Director and screenwriter Mansour Ghadarkhah then criticized the attitude of many representatives of the film industry, who, although left , still have racist thoughts in their heads and hold back when there is social and political tension.

reception

The movie was also shown outside of Germany. In 1994 Eye for Eye took part in the film art festival in Schwerin .

criticism

The critics of the television magazine TV-Spielfilm say briefly and aptly: "The mirror is held up to us without being embellished."

The film project website mandacaru comments on the drama: “The film depicts in an exciting way the tragedy of one of these families who cannot lead a quiet existence here or in their homeland. He encourages understanding for people who ask for help in life-threatening need. "

“As a feature film, 'Eye for Eye' impresses with its surprising twists and turns and the psychological realization of the scenes of violence. Oppression and torture - we ourselves remain at a clear distance and are thereby determined for an inner dialogue. "
