Downtown is the I. of XVII. Planning areas of Augsburg . With around 43,000 inhabitants, downtown Augsburg is the most populous district of Augsburg.

Augsburg city center is enclosed in the east by the Lechhausen planning area , in the south by Spickel-Herrenbach , the Hochfeld and the Antonsviertel , in the west by Pfersee and in the north by Oberhausen .

This includes the following nine boroughs:
- Lechviertel, eastern Ulrichsviertel
- City center, St. Ulrich Cathedral
- Train station and Bismarck district
- Georgs and Kreuzviertel
- City hunter district
- Pale and Parish
- Jakobervorstadt-Nord
- Jakobervorstadt-Süd
- At the Schäfflerbach

The borders form two north-south axes:
- from the cathedral via Rathausplatz and Maximilianstraße to Ortisei and Afra
- from the Stadttheater via Fuggerstraße, Königsplatz, Konrad-Adenauer-Allee to Theodor-Heuss-Platz
In the north the Georgs- and Kreuzviertel adjoins, in the south the Bahnhofs-, Bismarckviertel.

The old town is located in a part of the territory of these four districts:
