The Augstbach is a 5 km long mountain river in the Ausseerland in Styria . It rises in the area of boggy meadows in the Blaa-Alm in the Altaussee district of Ramsau and initially flows in a southern, later in a southeastern direction, crosses Altaussee and flows into the Altausseer Traun shortly after it leaves the Altausseer See .

The valley of the Augstbach separates the Loser ( 1838  m ) from the solitary Sandling ( 1717  m ) on the southwest edge of the Dead Mountains .

The water quality of this stream shows a very high level. The water quality is I or I-II.

History

Originally the Augstbach flowed 250 m north of the lake outflow into the Altausseer See. Its streambed, however, was artificially relocated so that it now flows west of the Altaussee lake and only flows into the Traun 150 m below the lake outflow. Morphologically, the division of the Augstbach is clearly visible (e.g. at the graduation facility ), as today's river bed is up to 5 m higher than its surroundings. The Altaussee waterworks is located in the former mouth of the Augstbach.

The relocation, which took place before 1530, is likely due to the fact that, due to the nearby salt mining and the brine drainage into the Bad Aussee saltworks , which was operated from the 13th century, brine repeatedly spilled into the Augstbach and thus reached the Altausseer See, where the rich fish stocks have been severely decimated.

Flood protection

In the event of floods, enormous amounts of water as well as rubble and wild wood can be transported away from the catchment area of the Augstbach.

On the basis of the "Augstbach 2008" protection project, the following measures were implemented:

  • Construction of a flood retention basin with wild wood rake (completion 2012)
  • Construction of a sediment retention barrier (completion 2012)
  • Rehabilitation of the lower reaches (beginning of 2013)

The flood retention basin with a retention volume of approx. 57,000 m³ will reduce the 100-year peak discharge from 35 m³ / s to around 22 m³ / s. This high water peak can be safely transported away from the Augstbach.

useful information

The Augstbach is organically managed by the Austrian Federal Forests . With regard to the fishing use, it is divided into several sections due to the flood protection measures, which represent insurmountable barriers for fish. In addition to the brown trout , the Augstbach has an autochthonous population of the smaller stone trout as a special feature . The Koppe also occurs. The occurrence of the stone crab is suspected, but could not be proven.
