Life

August was a son of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt (1536–1586) from his second marriage to Eleonore (1552–1618), daughter of Duke Christoph von Württemberg . August received in-depth training, which was concluded with an extensive educational trip.

As early as 1589, a division of the Land of Anhalt was negotiated between August and his brothers and when the division was supposed to take shape in 1603, August renounced participation and was satisfied with a financial settlement. In 1606, his brothers divided Anhalt, with Johann Georg Prince of Anhalt-Dessau , Christian Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg , Rudolf Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Ludwig becoming Prince of Anhalt-Köthen . Due to irregularities in the way the severance payment was made, Prince Christian von Bernburg ceded the office of Plötzkau to his brother in 1611 , where August has ruled since then under Bernburg sovereignty.

The outbreak of the Thirty Years' War in 1618 hit the Anhalter Land hard. Since 1621 August has also been the guardian of his Zerbst nephew, Prince Johann VI. , in 1650 the regency for his Koethen nephew Wilhelm Ludwig was added.

Since 1630 August was the senior of the house and therefore managed the general affairs of the house as stipulated by house law. The output of the Thirty Years' War Anhalt was indeed Ascher life deprived, but it remained in the possession of the drawn pen good Gernrode . The enormously increased debts were taken over by the estates at a Landtag in 1652, tax agreements were regulated and an improvement in the administration of justice decided.

Since 1621 August was a member of his brother Ludwig's fruitful society (founder of this society) under the name of “the victorious” .
