Adrian Diel
August Friedrich Adrian Diel (born February 4, 1756 in Gladenbach , † April 22, 1839 in Diez ) was a German doctor and founder of pomology at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Life
Adrian Diel's father Kaspar Ludwig was a surgeon and pharmacist. After studying in Giessen and Strasbourg in 1780, August Friedrich Adrian obtained a doctorate in medicine and surgery at his last place of study in Giessen. Then he became a doctor in Gladenbach. From 1786 he served as a family doctor for Count von Spaur, who was a judge at the Imperial Court of Justice in Wetzlar, and dealt mainly with balneology . In 1790 he took over the office of spa doctor in Bad Ems in Nassau service and at the same time that of district physician at his home in Diez. In the same year Diel became court advisor, later privy councilor of the Duchy of Nassau. He married Maria Altgelt, who came from a Diezer family, but died soon afterwards. Diel planted extensive orchards with allegedly up to 12,000 apple trees around the property known today in Diez as "Haus Eberhard", which his wife brought into their marriage.
He achieved importance as a breeder of fruit varieties and author of important pomological writings, which laid the foundation for the rise of this science in the 19th century. In addition to his works on the system of fruit trees, Diel also exercised political influence to promote fruit growing in the Duchy of Nassau. After the vineyards in the immediate vicinity of Diez had been largely destroyed by pests, Diel had large plum groves planted there. The introduction of morello cherries in higher elevations in the Lahn area and a Nassau government ordinance to plant fruit trees on the roadsides and to plant orchards in schools go back to his initiative.
Diel's marriage to Adrietta Dorothea Christine, née Scriba, had seven children.
In 1925 the city of Diez named a new street “Dielstraße”. In his birthplace Gladenbach there is an "Adrian-Diel-Straße".
