biography

As the son of a master weaver , August Götze became familiar with the textile trade at an early age. After completing school in Glauchau, he began a three-year commercial apprenticeship in a cutlery shop in Naumburg , before he found his first job in the Chemnitz machine factory Wiede.

In 1839 August Götze became a partner in Richard Hartmanns ' machine factory , with Hartmann being responsible for technology and Götze for business. At the beginning of 1842 - after separating from Hartmann - he founded the Götze & Comp. The factory was located on Zwickauer Strasse and manufactured machines for the textile industry as well as steam engines and turbines . When he left the management in 1856, he transferred his shares to his brothers-in-law Theodor and Ernst Wiede.

Götze founded various joint stock companies , such as the non-profit construction company and the Chemnitz-Stollberger Railway in 1855, the Dresden-Freiberg-Chemnitz Railway Committee in 1856, the stock spinning mill in 1857 and the Chemnitz-Würschnitzer Railway in 1861. He made merits as commercial director of the stock spinning mill.

In 1848 he was a member of the second chamber of the Saxon state parliament and was a member of the commission to discuss commercial and employment relationships. The city councilors of Chemnitz elected him unpaid city councilor in 1852, and he held this mandate until 1856. From 1870 to 1872 he worked as a city councilor in Chemnitz. According to Götze's plans, both the Schillerplatz and the municipal aqueduct were built. Together with the city councilor Robert Zipper, he revised the street names in Chemnitz and contributed to the financing of the St. Georg Hospital and the promotion of the commercial school for the construction of the city pool.

In 1862 Götze had a villa built in the direct vicinity of his company (today Dresdner Straße 18).
