August Gudewill

Johann August Christel Friedrich Gudewill (born August 6, 1854 in Thedinghausen ; † February 6, 1906 in Bremen ) was a German banker , founder and namesake of the Thedinghausen Oberschule , the Gudewill School .

Life

Gudewill's father, Gustav Friedrich Gudewill, was a wealthy businessman. At the age of just 23, his father left him a business when he died. Since 1897 there was a private bank in Thedinghausen . Gudewill was one of its founders . After a newly opened savings bank competed with his bank, he closed it and had the building demolished. Today there is a branch of the Kreissparkasse Verden there . The old house was rebuilt elsewhere in the village and converted into a farmhouse . The associated property is specified as 14 acres , i.e. around 5 hectares . Gudewill did not marry and left no offspring.

Gudewill Foundation

In his will , Gudewill stipulated that his land and house should be sold and that the assets should be transferred to a foundation . The aim of the "August Gudewill Foundation zu Thedinghausen" is charitable . For example, schools or day-care centers are supported, such as the Gudewill School, which received help with the implementation of a musical. The purpose of the foundation located in Braunschweiger Straße in Thedinghausen is fully stated as follows:

"Support of old and needy people, promotion of public health care, youth care, monument preservation, free welfare, sports, cultural purposes, popular education, local history, fire protection, nature conservation - only in the area of ​​the municipality of Thedinghausen"
