August Holmberg
August Johann Holmberg (born August 1, 1851 in Munich ; † October 7, 1911 there ) was a German sculptor and painter . From 1900 he was director of the Neue Pinakothek .
Life
In 1866, at the age of 15, Holmberg came to the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown, where he learned sculpture. Two years later he gave this up in favor of painting and became a pupil of the painter Wilhelm von Diez .
After the end of the Franco-Prussian War , Holmberg returned to the Academy in Munich. Supported and encouraged by his teachers, he was able to make several study trips through Germany, Italy and France between 1875 and 1878. He made long stays in Paris and Rome to study the old masters .
Around 1878/1879 Holmberg settled in Munich as a freelance painter. He also took part in many art exhibitions and at a large picture show at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , his work was awarded a gold medal.
Holmberg was a great collector of antiques, pictures, etc. When he died in Munich in 1911 at the age of 60, the entire estate was given to the Helbing Gallery , which auctioned it on May 30th and 31st, 1912.
Holmberg's work ranges from genre to historical pieces . His skillful play of light and shadow, especially with the latter, made him popular with the public and official art critics alike.
