August Ludwig Bruns was born at the time of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg during the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover in 1790. After the so-called " French era " and the elevation of the electorate to the Kingdom of Hanover , the factory owner and finance senator wanted to set up an insurance company based on the model of the Gothaer life insurance bank . Even before the beginning of the industrial revolution , Bruns founded the “Rauch-, Schnupf-, Kautaback- und Cigarren” factory AL Bruns in Hanover in 1820 .

Together with Carl Ahles , Franz Krohne and Friedrich Kromcke, the factory owner first founded an " Association for the establishment of a general, mutual life insurance company for the Kingdom of Hanover", the purpose of which was to prepare the insurance to be set up. Finally, the sovereign, King George IV , who ruled in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland , granted the necessary approval through which Bruns was able to found the “ General Life Insurance Establishment for the Kingdom of Hanover ” in 1829 .

The address book of the royal capital and residence city of Hanover for the year 1847 recorded Bruns with residence at Breite Straße 27 as a merchant, deacon at the Aegidienkirche , tobacco manufacturer, general agent of the Leipzig fire insurance institute and general director of the Hanoverian general life insurance institute.

At the 22nd general assembly of the trade association for the Kingdom of Hanover on March 3, 1850 in the Hanstein Hall, "Senator Bruns" took an active part as a board member of the Hanover provincial association.

Bruns established a foundation , through whose performances among the confirmands of the parochial school Hanover, the later Bürgererschule 1/2, "honorary bonuses to the two best computers and the two best calligraphers " of the institution should be distributed.
