August Varenius (originally: Varen ; born September 20, 1620 in Hitzacker , † March 15, 1684 in Rostock ) was a German Lutheran theologian who taught as a professor at the University of Rostock .

Life

Varenius was a son of the Brunswick-Lüneburg court preacher Heinrich Varenius (1595-1635) and his wife Anna Freder († 1623). His brother Bernhard Varenius (1622–1650 or 1651) made a name for himself as a geographer.

After studying Protestant theology in Helmstedt , Königsberg and Rostock and studying Hebrew in Hamburg , Varenius received his master's degree on August 30, 1643 and then became professor of the Hebrew language and Christian catechesis at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock. In 1648 he earned his licentiate at the Theological Faculty in Rostock, 1650 he was appointed Dr. theol. PhD. In 1663 he moved up to the second ducal professorship in theology in Rostock, which he held until his death. He was the rector of the university eight times .

As a representative of Lutheran orthodoxy , Varenius wrote numerous pamphlets against Catholics, Calvinists and Socinians , but also exegetical and dogmatic works and theological disputations.
