August von Bechmann

August Ritter von Bechmann (born August 16, 1834 in Nuremberg , † July 11, 1907 in Munich ) was a German university professor of Roman law .

Life

As a scholarship holder of the Maximilianeum , Bechmann began studying law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He finished it at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin .

After settling on the 1861 University of Würzburg habilitation , he had been in 1862 o. Professor of Law at the University of Basel . This was followed by professorships at the Philipps University in Marburg , the Christian Albrechts University Kiel (1864), the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen (1870), the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (1880) and the LMU (1888). He was rector in Kiel in 1869/70 , in Erlangen in 1872/73 and 1876/77 and in Munich in 1894/95. In 1891 he was appointed the Ordinary Imperial Council of the Kingdom of Bavaria in Munich . From 1868 Bechmann represented the University of Kiel in the Prussian mansion for a short time , but had to give up this seat because of his move to Erlangen. Since 1888 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

He mainly dealt with property and sales law. In it he advocated the thesis that the identity of a debtor does not depend on previously established legal maxims or principles, but is solely determined by the intention, ie the economic purpose of the debt relationship.

Bechmann married Marie Kraft on April 3, 1861 . From this marriage 3 daughters were born. Marie Bechmann died in December 1871. On May 26, 1873 he married Adelheid Thomasius , daughter of Gottfried Thomasius . This marriage remained childless.
