Peter Layard Richard Grenville, Baron Layard (* 15. March 1934 ) is a British economist and emeritus professor at the London School of Economics (LSE) in London . He has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since 2000 .

Life

Layard studied history at King's College of the University of Cambridge and was then as a teacher and research fellow of the Robbins Committee on Higher Education operates. After studying economics at the London School of Economics, he then worked as an academic teacher at the LSE (from 1980 until his retirement in 1999 as a professor) and as a consultant for various organizations and government agencies. Tony Blair's labor market reforms were based in part on his proposals.

He specialized in education and labor economics . In recent years he has endeavored to incorporate knowledge from happiness research into economics.

On May 3, 2000 he was raised to life peer as Baron Layard , of Highgate in the London Borough of Haringey, and has been a member of the Labor Party in the House of Lords ever since .

In 2010 Layard founded the social movement “ Action for Happiness ” in Great Britain together with Geoff Mulgan and Anthony Seldon , which works to build a happier and more caring society worldwide.

Layard is married to Molly Meacher , who was also promoted to life peer as Baroness Meacher in 2006 . He is a Research Fellow of the Institute for the Future of Work (IZA), from which he was awarded the IZA Prize in Labor Economics in 2008 .
