Auguste Dorothea von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (born December 16, 1666 in Wolfenbüttel ; † July 11, 1751 at Augustenburg Castle near Arnstadt ) was a daughter of Duke Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and his wife Juliane von Holstein-Norburg.

Life

Auguste Dorothea married Count Anton Günther II of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen on August 7, 1684 in Wolfenbüttel . He became Prince of the Reich in 1697 and resided in Arnstadt.

In 1699, her husband gave her a piece of land on which she had Augustenburg Castle built until 1710, which only stood for about 50 years. She put on a large collection there, which included porcelain items, paintings, jewelry and other handicrafts. When Count Anton Günther died in 1716, she spent her widowhood (35 years) on the Augustenburg, which no longer exists , creating the famous “ Mon plaisir ” doll cabinet together with her court ladies . It is a replica of a baroque residential town in miniature format, in which the courtly life, but also the market bustle and the craft businesses are depicted. This is shown today with around 400 figures and 2,600 items in inventory in 82 rooms in the New Palace in Arnstadt . Many of the figures and ceramic products in this doll town come from the faience factory in Dorotheental , which was founded near Augustenburg at the request of the princess. In around fifty years, Auguste Dorothea invested all of her fortune in this collection, especially in the furnishings for “Mon paisir”, and when she died in 1751 she left heavy debts.

Like her father, she became a Catholic, surrounded herself with priests and nuns and set up a small private monastery in her castle. She was buried in the church in the Ursuline convent in Erfurt .
