Auguste Philippe Louis Emmanuel von Croÿ , also August von Croÿ , (born November 3, 1765 in Condé-sur-l'Escaut , Département Nord , France ; † October 19, 1822 in Condé-sur-l'Escaut) was the 9th Duke of Croÿ , Prince of Solre , Prince of Mœurs etc., Imperial Prince of the Holy Roman Empire , Spanish grandee, first class and German nobleman . He was also known as Beautiful August .

Life

August was the first son of six children of Anne Emmanuel Herzog von Croÿ (1743-1803), Prince of Solre etc., and Princess Auguste Friederike zu Salm-Kyrburg (1747-1822). He was by birth Prince of the Holy Roman Empire. He had two brothers: Emmanuel Marie Maximilien (* 1768 in Paris; † 1848 in Le Rœulx , French general ) and Gustave Maximilien Juste (* 1773 in Condé-sur-l'Escaut; † 1844 in Rouen , French cardinal ).

He emigrated with his family in 1791, with the rank of French major, before the consequences of the storming of the Bastille .

On February 25, 1803 - due to the agreements of the Peace of Lunéville on February 9, 1801 and the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 - he received the County of Dülmen as a feudal area to compensate him for the loss of his areas on the left bank of the Rhine.

During the restoration of the Bourbons with the Charter of 1814 , he was appointed Peer of France .

He married his first wife Anne-Victurnienne-Henriette de Rochechouart de Mortemart (* 1773 in Paris; † 1806 in Dülmen) on January 10, 1789. His second wife Anne-Marie Maria Dillon (* 1795 in London; † 1827 in Paris) He married Comtesse Dillon de Costello-Gallen on November 5, 1821.
