The Augustusberg is 507 meters high mountain in the Eastern Ore Mountains . It rises to the east of Bad Gottleuba about 150 meters above the valley of the Gottleuba .
geology
The Augustusberg is mainly made up of granites (tourmaline granite from Gottleuba, Markersbacher biotite granite) and gneisses . These two bedrocks in the Ore Mountains are covered by Cretaceous deposits. The summit of the mountain is made up of gray, iron-lined sandstone (Labiatus cuboid).
Paths to the summit
The summit can be reached by a short cul-de-sac from the state road 173 Pirna - state border ( Petrovice u Chabařovic ) (formerly Neue Dresden-Teplitzer Poststrasse ). In addition, several hiking trails lead to the Augustusberg. The Eisenach – Budapest mountain hiking trail also leads over the summit.
Mountain hotel and former observation tower
The predecessor of today's mountain hotel was a simple log house built in 1880 as a "mountain restoration". At the same time, the Mountain Association built a 10-meter-high wooden observation tower for Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland , which, however, collapsed in 1891 as a result of storm damage. In 1893 the town of Gottleuba built a new building, again made of wood, but with a stone substructure. This tower had to be demolished after the Second World War because it was in disrepair; it remained without replacement.
view
The Augustusberg, located high above the eastern slope of the Gottleubatal, offers a good view of the Elbe Valley and the Eastern Ore Mountains. In good conditions, the view extends into the Elbe valley as far as the Dresden TV tower and towards the Eastern Ore Mountains over the Gottleuba dam to the Geisingberg , Kahleberg and the Frauenstein castle ruins .
Monuments
On the summit is a memorial stone placed in 1963, which commemorates the fights during the liberation wars on the occasion of the 150th anniversary . The transformer house at the junction of the road to Augustusberg has had a corresponding inscription since 1913. In August and September 1813 there were several heavy skirmishes in connection with the Battle of Kulm in the area between Berggießhübel and Hellendorf .
