Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola , (born August 4, 1753 in Rimini ; † June 30, 1798 ibid) was an Italian writer , scholar , translator from German, historian and literary critic .

Life

Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola entered the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore near Siena at the age of 15 after completing his education in the seminary of Todi in 1769 . From 1773 Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola lived in Siena. The success of the Notti clementine 1775 , which appeared in 18 editions during his lifetime, earned him a chair in geography and history at the Accademia di Marina in Portici, founded in 1735 . He was particularly interested in the German language, which, unlike his fellow Italian translators, he mastered himself. Therefore he did not have to rely on French translations from German. In 1783 he received the permanent dispensation to live outside the monastery and returned to Rimini from Naples. In 1785 a study visit to Vienna followed as a guest of the Rimini cardinal Giuseppe Garampi . After returning from Vienna, Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola was appointed to the chair of history at the University of Pavia , which he had to give up in 1793 for health reasons. Further trips during these years took him to Hungary, Austria and Germany. The brothers Johann Georg Jacobi and Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi met in Freiburg and Düsseldorf . From 1789 Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola became enthusiastic about the ideals of the French Revolution . In 1798 Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola returned sick from Rome to his hometown Rimini, where he died on June 30, 1798. The Abbate was notorious for his numerous affairs.

Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola became known for his Notti clementine , written in 1774 , a poem in the style of Young on the death of Pope Clement XIV in Italy. In 1777 he published a selection of Gessner's idylls that he had translated himself . In 1779 he published the Idea della poesia alemanna , 1782–1796 the Favole and 1784 Idea della bella letteratura alemanna . In 1787 Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola traveled via Zurich and Waldshut on the Rhine to Düsseldorf . Viaggio sul Reno , a travel novel in 16 letters, published in 1795 on the basis of the diaries , is regarded as his main work and on the one hand prepares the romantic landscape poetry in Italy , on the other hand Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola became the founder of the Rhine romanticism through the work .

Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola paved the way for the reception of contemporary German literature in Italy. He introduced authors such as Salomon Gessner , Wilhelm Heinse , Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Christoph Martin Wieland to Italy. There was an ideological distance to Goethe , which he revealed in a letter to Gessner dated October 26, 1779: "With regard to Goethe, I did not want to keep silent and suppress my feelings. He is completely unknown in Italy and I ask Heaven that it be so remains".

Aurelio de 'Giorgi Bertola's major works were promptly translated into German and published.
