The Aurora is a former training ship of the seafaring school Leer (Institute for Seafaring of the University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg / Ostfriesland / Wilhelmshaven ).

The ship was built in 1952/53 as a buoy laying north for the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration . It was used by the Emden Waterways and Shipping Office until it was decommissioned in early 1998 .

history

The ship was built under construction number 16 at the Jadewerft in Wilhelmshaven for the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration and commissioned on July 31, 1953 as the north for the then North Water and Shipping Office (later Emden Water and Shipping Office). From the home port of Norderney , the Norden was used for navigation sign tasks in the area of the East Frisian Islands . After almost 45 years of service, it was replaced by a new north on January 28, 1998 .

The support group “Seefahrtschule Leer” eV acquired the ship on March 10, 1998 and made it available as an aurora for the nautical training of prospective ship officers and captains . There was space for 16 people on board. The operation of the ship was financed from the membership fees of the “Seefahrtschule Leer” eV support group, the budget of the Oldenburg / Ostfriesland / Wilhelmshaven University of Applied Sciences and donations from businesses in the Leer area.

Since the sponsorship group was no longer able to afford the approximately € 60,000 maintenance costs required each year, the ship was sold to a ship enthusiast from Esbjerg in February 2009 .

Furnishing

The ship is propelled by two marine diesel engines that act on two Voith-Schneider propellers . The original engine power was 478 kW.

In Esbjerg, parts of the drive system were replaced and two Caterpillar diesel engines (type: 3406) and two twin disc gearboxes were installed.

The ship is built in such a way that it can easily fall dry in the Wadden Sea , because all moving parts of the hull are higher than the flat keel . A working crane ( load capacity 7 t, outreach 8.5 m) is installed on the forecastle for launching and retrieving the navigation mark .

Whereabouts of the ship

The Aurora was reported scrapped just two months after it was sold. However, it was on Vikingkaj in Esbjerg until November 2011, where it was overhauled and a new drive system installed. In November 2011, the resold Aurora Esbjerg left and was transferred to Belize .
