The Ausable River is a tributary of the Huron Sea in the Canadian province of Ontario .

The Ausable River rises near the settlement of Staffa in the parish of West Perth in Perth County . From there it flows in a predominantly westerly direction past the towns of Exeter , Ailsa Craig and Nairn . At Arkona the Ausable River turns north.

The course of the lower Ausable River underwent major changes in 1875. Originally the Ausable River flowed in an elongated loop to the north to Grand Bend and then parallel to the shore of the Huron Lake again to the south and flowed into the Huron Sea at Port Franks . With the construction of a drainage canal, known as The Cut , the river's water will now be directed to Port Franks. In the old river bed, only a fraction of the water flows to Grand Bend, where there is also a drainage channel directly into the Huron Sea. Between Grand Bend and Port Franks, the Old Ausable Channel now forms the original lower course of the river.

The Ausable River has a length of about 240 km. Its catchment area covers 1142 km².
