Training in the I + D area in Switzerland

The training I + D sector in Switzerland is regulated nationally. There are many training opportunities in the so-called I + D professions (= information and documentation), which include the traditional job titles of librarian , archivist and documentalist . In order to ensure optimal coordination of training in Switzerland, the "Training Delegation I + D" from the " Association of Libraries and Librarians of Switzerland ", the "Swiss Association for Documentation" ( SVD ) (both from January 1st Merged in 2008 to form Library Information Switzerland ) and the "Association of Swiss Archivists" ( VSA ) founded in November 1994 and institutionalized in 2007 as a simple society.

There are three basic variants or options for training in the I + D area:

Specialist in information and documentation EFZ

The training courses with completion from 1998 to 2011 received the title "Information and Documentation Assistant / in EFZ". The training courses with graduation from 2012 - that is, apprenticeship start from 2009 - are carried out in accordance with the new education ordinance and receive the title "Specialist information and documentation EFZ". Both are basic vocational training and are equivalent. "I + D specialists" is used as a neutral term for basic vocational training.

I + D specialists are responsible for the administration of media and information in I + D companies ( libraries , archives , documentation centers). You oversee the entire cycle: from acquiring, to developing (cataloging) and equipping, to conveying the media.

Short description

An I + D specialist supports the structure and organization of the media inventory of an I + D company. For this purpose he orders media or procures information on the Internet. Educational institutions

The apprenticeship lasts three years. It consists of a practical part in the training company and is supplemented by a theoretical part that takes place over a day and a half at one of the following vocational schools: at the Bern Commercial-Industrial Vocational School , at the École professionnelle commerciale de Lausanne or at the Zurich General Vocational School .

Diploma

At the end of the successful training, you will receive the federal certificate of competence as an "information and documentation assistant" or, from 2012, as a "specialist information and documentation EFZ". During the apprenticeship or after the apprenticeship, there is the possibility of attending vocational secondary school and completing the vocational diploma. This allows further training to become an information and documentation specialist at the university of applied sciences.

After the training, the following institutions are suitable as a place of work: libraries and media libraries, public and private archives, information and documentation centers at universities, hospitals and radio stations (radio and television). Private companies such as banks and insurance companies also employ I + D specialists.

Training centers

In Switzerland, you can study full-time at the University of Applied Sciences in Chur or at the Geneva University of Applied Sciences (Haute école de gestion, HEG). In addition, the HTW Chur offers the possibility of part-time studies, which can be attended in Chur or Zurich.

The HEG has been offering the bilingual course for a number of years, of which 20 percent is taught in German. In both schools, the course has a modular structure and is based on the Bologna guidelines .

Master of Advanced Studies (MAS)

Master of Advanced Studies in Information Science (Chur)

The University of Technology and Economics in Chur has been offering the postgraduate course for obtaining the " Master of Advanced Studies in Information Science" (formerly NDS Information Documentation) since 1992 . The target audience is primarily graduates who have not yet attended an "I + D course" and who therefore intend to gain an additional qualification with the post-graduate course.

In terms of content, the study program consists of three postgraduate courses ("Certificates of Advanced Studies" (CAS)). An introduction to the basics of information work is followed by a deepening and expansion of knowledge with the involvement of management and project management. Finally, a compulsory elective module in the areas of archive, library or documentation must be taken. This defines the specialization direction.

The place of study is limited to the Chur location. The duration of study is normally 18 months, which are necessary to obtain the 60 ECTS points and the title “Master of Advanced Studies in Information Science”.

Master of Science in Business Administration, Major Information Science (Chur)

Since 2010, the University of Applied Sciences in Chur has offered a consecutive Master’s degree in addition to the Information Science Bachelor’s degree. This is an extra-occupational part-time course and is a major in the Master of Science in Business Administration course.

The basics of the course are modules on scientific research methods and general management. They are supplemented by information science topics from the areas of information retrieval, information economy, open access, web development, knowledge representation and management of digital libraries. The course is primarily aimed at graduates of an information science bachelor's degree and therefore requires a university degree. Graduates from subject-related courses can also be admitted as part of an individual "sur dossier" procedure.

The course starts in autumn every year and 90 ECTS points can be achieved. Classes take place in Chur on Fridays and Saturdays and can also be followed via video transmission.

Master of Advanced Studies in Archival and Information Science (Bern)

Since autumn 2006, it has been possible to take part-time postgraduate studies in archive and information science at the University of Bern. After two years you will hold the title “Master of Advanced Studies in Archival and Information Science”. The postgraduate degree is a further training program for people with a university degree who are striving for a higher position in an I + D institution or who are already working in one. The structure of the NDS consists of a basic level (thematic block) and an advanced level (two thematic blocks and an internship). If you only complete the basic level, you get the “Certificate of Advanced Studies in Archival and Information Science” with the certificate thesis.

As already mentioned, this is a part-time course. The courses must be attended one full day per week plus half a day every two weeks (weekend). The course location is the University of Bern. This NDS is offered every two years and is completed after 60 ECTS points have been achieved.

Master of Advanced Studies in Library and Information Sciences (Zurich)

Since October 2007, the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich has offered a new continuing education course in library and information sciences. The university cooperates closely with the Zurich librarianship courses. The course is intended as a theoretical basis for practical applications in the workplace. As in Bern, this is also a part-time training opportunity. Thus, the master’s course is mainly aimed at people with a university degree (licentiate or master’s) and who also work in an I + D institution.

The course lasts two years and requires 60 ECTS points to be achieved upon completion. A six-month professional experience is also required.

The University of Geneva offers a two-year NDS to obtain a certificate in I + D.

The course is aimed both at working people who are already working in an I + D institution and at those who have a university degree.

The training consists of five modules spread over four semesters. In total, the participants attend between 600 and 700 lessons over two days of the week.

Masters course at Geneva University of Applied Sciences

The Geneva University of Applied Sciences (HEG), together with the Department of Libraries and Information Science of the Francophone University of Montreal (École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l'information; EBSI) offers a master’s degree, of which one year each in Montreal and in Geneva takes place. The focus of the course is on the fields of management, leadership and corporate management.

Related training

Librarian SAB

This is about training for part-time librarians who work in community or school libraries. In contrast to the training as an I + D assistant and I + D specialist, this is not officially recognized.

The admission requirements for the course, which comprises at least 100 lessons, are much more generous than those mentioned above. A completed vocational training or a high school diploma is sufficient.

The basic course is followed by a leadership course, which again contains at least 50 lessons.

This course is offered by the CLP ("Communauté de travail des bibliothèques suisses" = SAB) in French-speaking Switzerland and by various cantons in German-speaking Switzerland.

After successfully completing the course, you will receive a certificate as a librarian SAB.

Basic course for archivists: basic knowledge of archives

This basic course is offered by the Association of Swiss Archivists VSA. A prerequisite is already existing practical experience in archiving.

Conservation and restoration

The University of the Arts in Bern offers a practice-oriented bachelor's and master's degree in conservation and restoration.

Theoretical knowledge is conveyed through lectures, exercises and seminars. In specialized studios and laboratories, students can gradually improve their practical skills on original works.

The course lasts three years for the bachelor's degree. An additional two years are required for the master’s degree.

Certificat de formation continue en gestion de documentation et de bibliothèque

This year-long training program was launched by the University of Friborg in cooperation with the University of Geneva and the Association of Libraries and Librarians in Switzerland (BBS).

The aim is to refresh the subject-specific skills for librarians and employees in the I + D area. Interested parties with a university degree must be able to demonstrate a minimum of three years of I + D professional experience before the course begins. In terms of content, the course focuses on the areas of library science, computer science, communication and management.

Gestion des médias imprimés et interactifs

This training opportunity is offered by the Haute École d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud (HEIG-VD). The technical aspect of information, the various and related technologies and the dissemination of information are central elements of the course. The processing of data and the transfer of data content to various carriers are also dealt with. After completing your training, you hold the title of "Ingénieur HES des médias".

Prospective graduates are encouraged to gain professional experience in a company that specializes in information before starting their training.
